Fair Franchising Seal Recipients

Accredited Contract Recipients

The Fair Franchising Seal is a powerful marketing tool rewarding fair franchising practices. The AAFD honors Seal recipients in the marketplace and thereby encourages negotiated franchised relationships and ethical franchising practices. Only franchisors that earn the Fair Franchising Seal are eligible to market their franchise opportunities through the AAFD, and through AAFD sponsored trade shows. The AAFD Fair Franchising Seal sets a new standard for franchise selection.

The Dawn of Franchisor Accreditation

The AAFD's philosophy of promoting marketplace solutions is dramatically embodied in the AAFD's Fair Franchising Standards and Franchisor Accreditation Program. Designed to prove that fair franchising is good business, the AAFD's Fair Franchising Seal is available to any franchisor whose franchise agreement and franchising practices support the principles of Total Quality Franchising as enunciated in the AAFD Fair Franchising Standards and receives a high approval rating from the franchisees of its system. Although the AAFD bestows the Fair Franchising Seal upon franchisors that meet the Association's criteria, it is the franchisees of the particular system that nominate their franchisor and ultimately determine whether or not the franchisor has met the criteria to earn the Seal and retain it.

The Fair Franchising Seal is available to any franchisor that meets the following criteria:

  • The franchisor must recognize an independent franchisee association or AAFD Trademark Chapter.
  • The franchisor and independent franchisee association must each certify to the AAFD (and the AAFD must confirm), that the franchisor's franchising practices and then current franchise agreement are consistent with the spirit of the AAFD's Fair Franchising Standards.
  • The franchisor must have received a satisfactory rating from its franchisees pursuant to an independent survey measuring the franchisees' satisfaction with the business practices of the franchisor.

The Straw Hat Cooperative Corporation was formed in 1987 as the result of an attempted buyout by Pizza Hut. Now entirely owned by the individual store owners or "members", Straw Hat has established a model for fair franchising in the restaurant industry.
